Sauna Aid has sent a mobile sauna built by Norwegian architecture students on an approximately 1,860-mile journey from Oslo to Ukraine. Project supplier Bygger’n reported on October 8 that the delivery was underway.
The students at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) built it in Trondheim with architect Sami Rintala. In a LinkedIn update, Bygger’n says its Bodø and Trondheim branches contributed materials and logistics.
Built for the trip
The wheeled sauna consists of three modules, measuring about 29.5 feet long and 8.2 feet wide overall. The team reduced the weight of the structure and timber to make transport possible, according to Bygger’n.
It was unveiled at the International Sauna Congress in Oslo, September 24–26, before departing for Ukraine in October. The same gathering hosted the launch of the Public Sauna-Bathing Charter.
Warmth and washing
Bygger’n says the sauna is intended to provide warmth and water for civilians who have lost access to both, and to support medical work near the front. Its report does not name the receiving organization or confirm arrival.
Sauna Aid’s work extends beyond this delivery. The International Sauna Association, which sponsors the initiative, describes its mission as supplying movable saunas and support services to communities affected by disasters. In Ukraine, it emphasizes bathing’s role in hygiene, social connection and maintaining familiar routines.
Mikkel Aaland, the author of Sweat and Naked Sweat, has documented earlier deliveries. In his July 2023 account from Staryi Sambir, he described handing over a 14-person sauna donated by Therme Group after a conference in Romania, and joining local residents for its first sessions.
