Sun Home Goes Traditional as Plunge Goes Infrared
Sun Home is adding stones, water and upper benches. Plunge is selling an easier-install infrared cabin—and borrowing headline health statistics from traditional Finnish sauna research to make its case.

Two of the most visible direct-to-consumer recovery brands in America are widening their sauna lines in opposite directions.
Sun Home's new Nova is the infrared-led company's first indoor traditional sauna. It has a stone-filled HUUM heater, water-on-stones löyly and two bench levels. Plunge's new infrared cabin starts at $7,690, plugs into a 120-volt circuit in its base configuration and surrounds the user with heater panels, speakers and colored lights.
Neither company has made a complete pivot. Sun Home still sells several infrared lines, and Plunge still offers its traditional Sauna and Sauna Mini. The news is the direction of travel. Sun Home is moving closer to the basic mechanics of sauna. Plunge is moving toward a lower-temperature appliance that is easier to place indoors—and dressing it in a health argument its cited studies do not establish.

Sun Home's first indoor traditional sauna is mostly pointed the right way
Sun Home built its name around polished infrared cabins and wellness language. The Nova is a material change. Its heater holds stones. Users can pour water over them. Its upper bench sits 34 inches above the floor, with a lower bench at 17 inches. A ventilation fan moves air through the cabin. The HUUM UKU controller adds Wi-Fi scheduling.
Those details matter more than the carbonized hexagonal tile, privacy glass or RGB lighting that occupy so much of Sun Home's sales copy. A sauna is not made traditional by cedar walls or Scandinavian-sounding design language. Heat, stones, water, airflow and the relationship between the bather and the ceiling are the functional test. On paper, Nova at least addresses all five.
It is not a bargain. The three-person Nova is currently listed at $11,999 and the six-person model at $15,799. Both arrive as indoor cabins, and both require the kind of dedicated 240-volt electrical work that Plunge is trying to avoid with its base infrared model. Sun Home also claims a 230°F maximum, but a ceiling number supplied by a manufacturer says little about heat distribution, warm-up behavior or the temperature at the upper bench.
The warranty deserves an asterisk too. Sun Home labels Nova cabinetry coverage a “limited lifetime warranty”, then defines that lifetime as seven years. After 90 days, the coverage is replacement parts only; labor and freight are excluded. That is a real warranty, but it is not what many buyers will hear when they read “lifetime.”
Sun Home's larger Solaris outdoor line reaches much higher prices and leans heavily on phrases such as “architectural masterpiece.” Nova is the more interesting move because it is simpler. It takes a mainstream wellness brand and gives its customers access to actual löyly without requiring a detached backyard structure. That is a decent product direction. Whether Sun Home has executed it well can only be answered after independently testing the cabin.
Plunge's infrared pitch is convenience packaged as performance
Plunge entered sauna with traditional electric cabins after becoming one of the best-known names in cold plunges. In a June launch essay, the company said it once doubted that it would ever build infrared. It now argues that infrared lowers the barriers: the Standard model can run on a common dedicated 120V/20A circuit, is intended for indoor use and arrives flat-packed for home assembly.
That is a distribution strategy, not a sauna breakthrough. A product that fits more homes can reach more buyers. Plunge adds an app, Nakamichi Bluetooth audio, chromotherapy and what it calls near-zero electromagnetic-field exposure. The Standard model is advertised to reach 160°F; buyers who want the company's 175°F headline need the 240V Pro. The optional red-light panel pushes that promoted Pro package to $9,980.
Plunge's newest comparison page against Sun Home makes the commercial intent unusually clear. It compares the $8,490 Plunge Pro with Sun Home's $9,999 Eclipse 2, emphasizing Plunge's higher claimed temperature and lower package price. This is manufacturer advertising, not an independent comparison. It does not tell a shopper how either cabin performs under the same instrumented test, how evenly each heats a body, how reliable the electronics are or what ownership looks like after several years.
The case for Plunge Infrared is therefore narrow: it is an expensive indoor heat cabin designed around installation convenience and a familiar recovery-brand ecosystem. Calling it the “market's hottest infrared sauna,” as Plunge does, cannot be verified from a hand-picked two-product chart.
The Finnish research does not validate Plunge Infrared
The more serious problem appears in the health section of Plunge's product page. Alongside its infrared cabin, the company highlights a 40% lower all-cause mortality figure, a 50% lower cardiovascular mortality figure and a 66% lower dementia-risk figure for frequent sauna users. It says the studies evaluated temperatures around 175°F, “consistent with” the Pro model.
But the cited evidence is not a clinical trial of Plunge Infrared, or of infrared sauna at all. The mortality paper followed 2,315 middle-aged men in eastern Finland and explicitly examined traditional Finnish sauna bathing. The dementia paper analyzed the same male Finnish cohort. Both reported associations in observational data. Neither randomized participants, tested an infrared cabin or established that a consumer product caused the reported outcomes.
Matching one temperature does not make two heating systems medically interchangeable. Traditional sauna heats the room and the bather in a high-temperature environment, with humidity pulses from water on stones. Infrared emitters transfer more radiant energy directly while operating in a cooler room. Those can both create heat stress, but “both are hot” is not a bridge from one modality's cohort data to another modality's product claim.
This is the recurring weakness in consumer infrared marketing: genuine sauna research is placed close enough to an infrared product that the distinction disappears for a casual reader. Our review of infrared versus traditional sauna evidence found that infrared research exists, but it is a smaller and less mature evidence base. Plunge had the option to describe that evidence precisely. Instead, it chose the larger Finnish numbers.
Opposite moves, different levels of credibility
Sun Home is not suddenly a guardian of Finnish sauna culture. Nova remains a premium-priced lifestyle product with decorative tile, app controls and lighting effects, sold through the same maximalist marketing machine as the company's infrared range. Its warranty language is less generous than its headline sounds, and the cabin still needs hands-on testing.
But its direction is coherent. Sun Home has added the elements that make a traditional sauna distinct: a capable stone heater, water, upper seating and ventilation. It is asking buyers to accept more electrical work and a higher price in exchange for a more complete sauna experience.
Plunge is moving the other way. It has reduced the installation hurdle, surrounded the cabin with consumer-electronics features and built a comparison funnel around claimed peak temperature. None of that proves a bad machine. It does mean the product's strongest demonstrated advantage is ease of sale and placement—not better sauna, stronger evidence or independently verified performance.
The bottom line
Sun Home's traditional expansion is promising enough to warrant a real test, not applause. The Nova specification gets important fundamentals right, but the price, warranty fine print and unverified performance claims keep it in the “interesting” column.
Plunge's infrared expansion deserves more skepticism. Its convenience story is obvious. Its attempt to wrap an infrared consumer product in headline results from traditional Finnish sauna cohorts is not. If Plunge wants to sell a $7,690-to-$9,980 infrared cabin on health, it should produce evidence about that cabin and that modality.
