Söpö was introduced as part of Harvia's broader push into the Japanese market, alongside new electric heaters designed to Japanese specifications and the establishment of the Harvia Japan Ltd joint venture with Bergman Ltd. "Söpö" is Finnish for "cute."

Per Harvia's 2023 Annual Report, the company also launched new heaters to Japanese electrical specifications and applied for additional Japan-specific certifications that same year. Söpö is not part of Harvia's North American consumer range.
