What a first visit to a sauna event in Estonia involves.

A suitsusaun is a chimneyless smoke sauna: the room fills with smoke while it heats, then is aired before bathers go in. Vihtlemine is the rhythmic use of a leafy sauna whisk to bring heat and scent to the skin. Follow the host’s pace; these sessions are meant to run slowly.

Many events move between home, village, mobile and smoke saunas. Bring a towel, water and shoes you can slip on quickly. Rural routes may need a car, and smaller saunas often need advance booking.
