Sauna Mother plans to open October 24 in Tokyo’s Roppongi neighborhood, selling two-hour private sessions built around a journey from the womb to newborn life. The venue’s website now says reservations are open, and its booking calendar lists sessions beginning on opening day.
Developed by WIQOMEDIAN and creative director Yuka Taki, the one-room facility takes one group of one to four people at a time. Mixed-gender groups can book together. The familiar sauna, cold bath and rest cycle runs through an unusually literal birth story, ending in a motorized sofa shaped like a mother’s embrace.
From the womb to a 59-degree bath
The company’s launch announcement specifies a sauna temperature of 185°F and 40% humidity, with guests able to pour water on the heater stones. Red lighting, heartbeat sounds, muffled outside noises and a scent intended to evoke a mother’s skin carry the theme into the hot room. A contoured bench lets guests curl into a fetal position.
The cold bath is set at 59°F and styled as a newborn’s first bath, with translucent curtains and water flowing from an oversized sculpted hand. The shower has its own maternal anatomy: a seat shaped like a torso and thighs, designed to suggest being washed on a mother’s lap.
A rocking sofa and four mothers
The Mother Sofa is the centerpiece. Its curved surface supports the body from head to legs, with a SIXINCH coating on the areas guests touch. It rocks at three selectable speeds, while projection mapping supplies a maternal face above the guest.
The four choices are Izanami, the mother goddess of Japanese mythology; an anime-style Two-Dimensional Mother; an Art Mother inspired by painters including Renoir, Klimt and Modigliani; and a Mythology Mother drawing on goddesses such as Gaia and Isis. The company plans to change some of the imagery over time.
The experience also includes a photo-based rebirth certificate. Gizmodo Japan’s October 13 preview documents a visit before the public opening, including the sofa, sauna and certificate.
What a private session costs
Published room prices cover the full two hours. Approximate dollar equivalents use about 158 yen to the dollar, in line with the October 15 exchange rate:
- One person: about $54 (¥8,500).
- Two people: about $76 (¥12,000).
- Three people: about $95 (¥15,000).
- Four people: about $127 (¥20,000).
That brings the per-person price to about $32 when four people share. Swimsuits and sauna hats rent for about $3 (¥500) each. The address is Keepers Roppongi B1F, 7-10-30 Roppongi, Minato City, Tokyo.
Sauna Mother joins a range of operators giving heat and cold water a distinct setting, including Othership’s music and social programming and Adventuremine’s underground sauna in Sweden. Here, the whole private session follows one story, with the rest furniture carrying as much of the concept as the hot room.
