U.S. Sauna Imports Face New 18% Tariff on Finnish and Baltic Products
A revised trade schedule could raise consumer prices and shift sourcing strategies for major North American distributors.
The Office of the United States Trade Representative announced Friday that imported sauna equipment, heaters, and thermally modified wood products from Finland, Estonia, and Latvia will be subject to an 18% ad valorem tariff beginning July 1, 2026. The measure, part of a broader reclassification of specialty construction and wellness products, represents the most significant trade action affecting the sauna industry in over a decade.
Scope of the Tariff
The new duty applies to HTS codes covering electric sauna heaters, sauna control systems, pre-fabricated sauna cabins, and thermally modified timber products commonly used in sauna construction. Industry sources estimate that 60-70% of saunas sold in the U.S. market incorporate components sourced from the affected countries.
This tariff doesn't just affect finished saunas. It hits the raw materials, the heaters, the controls. Every layer of the supply chain will feel this.
The tariff does not currently apply to Canadian-manufactured products or to infrared sauna panels, which are predominantly sourced from China and South Korea under different HTS classifications.
Industry Impact
Major importers and distributors are already recalculating their pricing models. SaunaNews has learned that at least two large North American distributors have begun exploring alternative sourcing arrangements with manufacturers in Canada and domestically.
The Finnish Sauna Equipment Manufacturers Association issued a statement calling the tariff "disproportionate and counterproductive," arguing that Finnish sauna products have no meaningful domestic equivalent in the U.S. market.
- 18% ad valorem tariff on sauna equipment from Finland, Estonia, Latvia
- 60-70% of U.S. saunas incorporate components from affected countries
- 8-14% projected retail price increase by Q4
- July 1, 2026 effective date
- April 15 public comment period opens
Consumer Pricing Outlook
Analysts expect retail sauna prices in the U.S. to increase by 8-14% by the fourth quarter if the tariff holds. The impact will be most pronounced in the premium segment, where Finnish-manufactured products dominate.
The USTR has indicated that the tariff schedule is part of a broader review and may be subject to adjustment following the comment period. Industry groups are expected to file formal objections starting April 15. SaunaNews will continue tracking this developing story.
